How should
you pray for Missionaries?
It has been stated that "the key to all missionary success is prayer." No one will deny the
truth of this statement, but often we find ourselves working to obtain the things God intends to give in answer to
prayer.
By making missionary success dependent primarily upon prayer, God has made it possible for
all to have a part in this most vital phase of the work. Many cannot go; some cannot give; but all can
pray. It is your prayers that the missionaries need
most.
Realizing that only the Holy Spirit's leadership can make prayer effective, we suggest the
following so that you may pray with understanding as He leads
you.
1. Pray that the
missionaries may be given wisdom to adjust themselves to the physical environment of the field - living conditions,
food, climate, etc. for each one must learn to care for his body.
2. Pray that they
may be given patience to continue studying the language of the people, especially when the task seems unending and
hopeless.
3. Pray that they
may learn to sense the feelings of the internationals, lest they unnecessarily offend people of another background
and culture.
4. Pray that they
may realize that the people of the field are to be discipled for Christ and not westernized.
5. Pray that the
members of the missionary circle may be able to live in close proximity with understanding, patience, and good
humor.
6. Pray that they
may not presumptously run into danger but that they may be given courage to face it calmly in the line of
duty.
7. Pray that younger
missionaries may wait prayerfully when they sense the need for changes in mission practice and method.
8. Pray that older
missionaries may know how to take suggestions from younger missionaries with humility.
9. Pray that single
missionaries may be helped to face loneliness, when their closest family ties are in the homelands.
10. Pray that the
children of missionaries may be kept in health and that their need for schooling on the fields be satisfactorily
met.
11. Pray that
missionary parents and children may be strengthened when the time for separation comes.
12. Pray that the
missionaries, when pressed by many needs, may be able to distinguish the tasks of God's choosing for
them.
13. Pray that they
may not yield to the temptation of substituting feverish activity for the maintaining and building up of their own
spiritual lives by prayer and meditation.
14. Pray that they
may grow into oneness of spirit with national leaders and workers.
15. Pray that they
may have the wisdom and insight neccessary to deal with problems requiring joint administration with the
nationals.
16. Pray that they
may be able to cooperate with God's Spirit in building national leaders needed to insure the continuity of the
work.
17. Pray that they
may be Spirit - led in their attempts to foster a truly indigenous work.
18. Pray that the
fruit of the Spirit may be evident in all its beauty in the missionaries' contacts with each other, with national
workers, with the people of the field, and with missionaries of other organizations.
